These AHFs were installed as a protective measure to safeguard one part of the gaming facilities at the Casino.

dreamstime_xs_32912577

Like any critical facilities such as Data Centres, semi-conductor manufacturing, automobile manufacturing etc., the costs of power interruption in Casinos are considerable. The maintenance of a robust and reliable power quality system is essential to keep up with the demanding 24hours operation at the Casino. Equipment such as slot-machines, electronic gaming table, lighting and data servers are mostly single phase non-linear loads that exert harmonic distortion into the system. This causes poor power quality in the distribution network and affects the performance and reliability of power system in the long run.

The project with RWS adds to Mun Hean’s casino project reference list, which includes The Venetian Macau and Galaxy Macau. Apart from Harmonics solutions, the Mun Hean PQ team also provided solutions for load balancing and power factor correction for these clients.

Protection Relay Installation Best Practise http://www.munhean.com/protection-relay-installation-best-practise/ Wed, 31 Jan 2018 07:47:02 +0000 http://www.munhean.com/?p=1426 Method to overcome Temporary Over Voltage damage

The usage of electrical relays to protect human lives and equipment from electrical faults is a mainstream practice, which is essential but often overlooked. The installation design and product choice are essential to creating an effective system that will perform without creating incidental problems.

This recent case involves the malfunction of an installed batch of protection relays at one of the largest resort and theme park in Singapore. The protection relays were installed since 2010. The relays formed part of a system design that protects the resorts’ electrical operation. However, this electrical system was plagued with a series of unverifiable electrical tripping. Over time, some of the protection relays completely failed to operate. Investigation revealed signs of electrical burnt marks on the relays.

Electrical consultant JM Pang was engaged by the owner to solve the on-going problem. One of the findings was the electrical trip events were without cause, or nuisance tripping. At the same time, the affected protection relays were powered by an auxiliary power tapped onto the incoming, before the breaker. This practice could have been one cause of the relay’s failure.

Energization of large power transformer is known to create Temporary Over Voltage condition. Such condition can last a few seconds in duration. In normal practice, the downstream circuits will be put to off position when a large power transformer is energized and protect downstream equipment from the Temporary Over Voltage stress condition. However, these stress will be exposed to relays that are tapping power before the circuit breakers. Causing the relay to fail prematurely.

JM Pang recommended a complete replacement of the installed relays with MH Protection Relays. Mun Hean Singapore was engaged for this replacement exercise. The replacement exercise will be carried out in phases, with the 1st phase involving a mass replacement for critical MSBs and SSBs with 186 pcs of MH Protection Relay REA200n and about 30pcs of EF18. The second phase will be completed by 1st quarter of 2018.

Power Grid2

Fig 1. Best Practise for Protection relay installed after the Supply Breaker

The MH Protection Relay was designed with the consideration of a “power-free” indication
and latched reset function called MTB. The designer understood the challenge of TOV
condition and needed a solution for a protection relay to provide operating status indication
without continuous power supply. The design of MTB was invented to solve this problem
and has remained to be the leading choice of power network protection in many parts of Asia.
MH Protection Relay with MTB are designed to be installed with power tapping after the
circuit breaker and circumvent the TOV condition challenge.

Data Centre World (DCW), Hong Kong 2017 http://www.munhean.com/data-centre-world-dcw-hong-kong-2017/ Fri, 09 Jun 2017 11:19:30 +0000 http://www.munhean.com/?p=1244 Mun Hean participated at the 2017 Data Centre World (DCW), Hong Kong, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 24-25 May 2017. The Data Centre industry has become a key area in Mun Hean’s portfolio growth. With notable success in Data Centre projects such as HSBC, ST Telemedia and NTT & PCCW, just to name a few, Mun Hean has raised its recognition as a provider for Energy Management System (EMS) for critical facilities.

The DCW is the largest dedicated Data Centre event in North Asia and the world’s largest independent data centre event. Over the two days at DCW, the event attracted over 7,000 IT professionals within the industry. At the Mun Hean booth, three distinct demonstrations were showcased:

Demonstration 1:      Janitza Power Quality Management

The UMG512 Class A analyser, UMG509 mid range analyser and UMG96-RM load analyser were connected to provide an overview of how a typical industrial and commercial building electrical management can be implemented. The Janitza GridVis PQM software provided the central data visualization and technical analysis on fault event recording and energy consumption reporting. The auto power quality reporting compliance to EN50160 and IEC61000-2-4 were demonstrated.

Demonstration 2:      Hakel Surge Protection

A working live demonstration of how coordinated surge protection can be implemented using Hakel SPD products. A Janitza UMG509 is used to capture the waveform to validate the working of the surge suppression with and without the use of SPD. Destructive testing of the harmful effect of surge was carried out using tungsten light buld as the sacrificial load experiencing a surge. The Hakel Isolguard leakage monitoring device was used to illustrate how early warning alert is achieved in IT-network installation.

Demonstration 3:       Sinexcel AHF and SVG PQ Solution

The working of AHF and SVG were demonstrated using live non-linear load to introduce harmonics pollution and also low power factor condition. The effective removal of harmonics THDi% was registered on a Janitza UMG509. The SVG ability to compensate for both Leading and Lagging power factor condition is also presented.

The visitor response to these demonstrations was excellent. The occasion was also graced by the visit of Markus Janitza, Managing Director of Janitza electronics GmbH, Germany. We would like to congratulate the Mun Hean Hong Kong team for a successful exhibition, and we look forward to the participation at Data Centre World (DCW), Singapore, at the Marina Bay Sands in October 2017.
